Either I'm lucky or just mean because after we made the switch (I too didn't know what I was doing and it was trial and error after baby girl was born) we just don't have disposables in the house...or not where sweet hubby can find them. He basically doesn't have an option! He 100% supports our cloth diapering. But if given the chance he'll sneak in a disposable here and there. I think he just wants to avoid a "this is how you do it" scenario enacted out by me. In addition, we use mostly prefolds and covers and I save my pockets for going out. He isn't even aware that there are "daddy-friendly" types out there! That being said, we're starting a cloth diaper service and he's suggested that he start learning all the tricks of the trade so that he can teach other daddies out there! With time, many daddies will come around--just give them a chance (or just not the chance to use disposables! Ha!)! (btw, just found your site and will be bookmarking and sharing!)

I guess I'm one of the lucky ones too! My husband actually was the one to suggest cloth while I was preggo. I thought he was the crazy one until I did my research. I still have some disposables left from the baby shower but if I put one on our son, my hubby asks if we are out of cloth diapers!

This article makes me appreciate my husband more. I decided I wanted to cloth diaper when I was pregnant but wasn't to informed and I knew my husband would think I was crazy. However, that is nothing new. A friend of a friend cloth diapered her two children and gave me all this valuable info. So I purchased about 12 Swaddlebees newborn fitted and some prefolds and covers and I was determined. We started when the baby came home and everything was great. Until baby had her first poop. I completely forgot what I had planned to do. Guess who stepped in and cleaned the diapers, my husband. He was telling me what I was doing wrong. My daughter is almost 3 months old and he is still helping me change and clean her cloth diapers.

I wanted to thank you for your great site. I had my first baby 02/08 and have visited your site often when getting started on cloth diapers. I have found a lot of helpful information over the past 6 months here. I have just started a blog myself and hope you don't mind that I put a link to your site on my blog. I'm a big advocate of cloth diapering and I think your site is great for new moms like me!

Thanks,
Heather Prenger, D.C.

not sure what you've tried already...I would try (probably in this order):

a free & clear detergent (these are fine for pf's & flats)
seventh generation 'sensitive care' (this one does not have enzymes)
Country Save

& of course remembering to change frequently.

let us know if that helps!!

I was wondering what your thought on washing cloth diapers for babies with sens skin. I just read your article on diaper rash and our situation is we use pf /flats with a various assortment of covers. We had been fighting a diaper rash off and on for 2-3 weeks and had to use disp bc we moved. Today was the first time back in cloth diapers and my dd has a rash that almost looks like a burn. Before we moved my friend who cloth diapers suggested using arm hammers washing soda with simple green to wash (it worked for her dd).

any thoughts?
REALLY wants to use cd!! :)

no neither of the 'diaper kids' in this family have any bow-legged problems & both started walking at average times (just after first birthday's). Diaper girl was the only cloth diapered from birth & yes especially early-on she had "stick out legs syndrome", as I used a one-size diaper starting at 8lbs (which meant the diaper took up half her body for a month or two). I admit i was concerned, however our pediatrician (& mommas on forums) assured me it was nothing to be concerned about. lo & behold, she's walking fine & no deformities. ;) she does waggle her booty a good bit when she runs though (even now out of diapers)....not sure if that's just her girly-hips or a repercussion of running-while-enormous-cloth-diapered. it's downright adorable.

Ryan, oh excuse me, Diaper Diva, I am sitting her laughing out loud right now! I miss how funny you always were/are and now you have gone up a notch by joining the ranks of cloth diapering...expertise! Wow, I am completely in shock of this whole blog right now! It's actually very helpful, though! So, is there anything in your blog about elimination communication? Or do you have a separate blog for that? :)

We like to use Thirsties Fab-Fitted with the Mother Ease Air Flow covers. By the way, did diaper girl or diaper boy ever have issues with walking (once they did start walking) with all the bulk of the diapers? Sometimes Cadence will be laying down on her side and because the diaper is so thick, her leg will lay straight out and we just laugh because it's so cute. But seriously, could it affect them being bow-legged or their walking? Have you encountered talk like this from any of the forums you've searched?

Hey Natalie! Glad to hear i've been able to help! As for detergent, For over a year I used All Free & Clear w/no problems EXCEPT, i use fleece liners & after awhile i had a suspicion that they were repelling (the diaper would be mostly wet on the edges, & not in the middle where I had my doublers placed!). This never led to any leaking, mostly I'm sure due to my OCD w/checking to see if her diaper is wet, but still.....So after reading & reading, apparently it's fleece that's "picky" about detergent. Free & Clear can build up on it pretty easy, causing repelling. I switched to Country Save (the natural foods store here carries it, I likely never would've dropped the $$ to ship it if it weren't avail. locally). You do have to dissolve it first (i learned this the hard way), I just keep a small cup & spoon by the washer & while the hot water is filling the washer, i gather some in the cup, then stir in the scoop of detergent, mix well & then pour into the wash. Kinda annoying as compared to my no-fuss system before, but it works well & lo & behold, the pee is now landing where it belongs, in the middle of the diaper where my doublers are.

So all that to say, if you don't use any fleece or pockets, then use whatever detergent you want that doesn't cause a rash on baby (I tried Tide once & it left rashes, due to enzymes).
